is a bilingual design studio supporting clients online globally and on-site in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Some of my clients are starting fresh in a new home…blank canvas. Most though are looking to shift things in their existing spaces.

It’s the most normal thing to want to change your environment when you are as well!

From home full of kiddos to empty nesting.

From a shared space with a partner to parceling out whose is whose.

From feeling the overwhelm of work, family, to dos to entering a season of rest.

From closing a chapter of womanhood to opening one of physical, emotional, spiritual shifts.

From being able to handle a moderate amount of chaos to needing more grounding than ever.

Yes, we are changing all the time and our homes can be healthy reflections of those changes.

A healing home with soulful design.
It’s rare when a client wants to decorate a space solely with second hand pieces. We’ve hit consignment shops, thrift stores, and the Alameda Antique Flea market. The home is intended to be space for various therapies and meditation circles. Its vibe is eclectic, global, and zen. I feel honored to co create such a special healing home.

🌿Deb. Santa Cruz, CA.
A design-home exchange.
I’ve had the joy of staying on site of projects a few times. It’s the way I prefer to design…to create as I feel into the space. In March, I had a unique arrangement of exchanging design services for rent in a beautiful part of Santa Cruz, CA. My client, Deb, is in her late 60s and built a small one bedroom in the back of her house which she will rent out. I created a design plan to complete the space and make it turn key ready!

A bedroom revival post divorce.
Relationship breakups are one of the hardest life transitions there are. From experience and a place of deep empathy, I guide clients going through this to discern emotional clutter, purge pieces that no longer serve them, and reinvent a once shared space into one that exalts a new version of themselves. This is what I’m doing with Susanne who is re designing her bedroom after 20+ years of marriage.

I had been feeling lonely a couple of weeks ago. It wasn’t a surprise. In March, I said good-bye to the community and familiarity of Baja to try something new in Santa Cruz, a place I’d only been to a handful of times in my life.

With one friend connection here, a single suitcase, and a very well used GPS, I found this transition was stretching me. And….I felt lonely.

Sharing this with my holistic interior design teacher, Kimberly Garner, I looked around at my surroundings and mused: I think my environment is mirroring my feelings.

I’d been living in my client’s practically empty ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) for several weeks, planning its design. Blank walls stared at me. Naked floors begged for warmth. Space echoed with nothing in it.
It all made me quite uncomfortable.

I was interpreting the home as empty, as a void. This isn’t something we readily embrace in American culture. Often emptiness connotes lack, a sense of barrenness. Without realizing it, the conversation I was having with my space was: “This is empty and sad and lonely.”

What Kimberly invited me to do was to reframe the message. What if emptiness is positive? What if it invokes spaciousness? What if it is the seed for possibility? In this context, the reality is not barren at all, really.

Given where I currently am in my life, a place of reinvention and certain adventure, the interpretation aligns. Having so much empty space provides me the freedom to create whatever I want with it, and isn’t that such a powerful feeling?

SOLO LIVING: lessons & benefits of being your own roomie [newsletter excerpt]

Throughout my whole life, I think I’ve lived alone a total of two years. I had a slight resistance to it maybe, thinking I’d be lonely. Yet, mid life has given me the chance to experience this and I’ve gotta say, it’s really not that bad- at all! There are many things I didn’t expect to receive; here are a few:

☀️Identifying on my priorities. Living on my own, I realize making my bed starts off the day right, keeping surfaces clean helps with mental clutter, and having a stash of dark chocolate somewhere always helps a hard day.

☀️Reclaiming my emotional space. There’s something that happens when you can play whatever music suits your mood, when you can sage the heck out your room at any given moment, when you can get up in the middle of the night to journal or meditate or binge on said chocolate and not have to worry about anyone else.

☀️Getting to know myself and really like her. Moving through the day in my space, I recognize I feel ease. Whether I’m cooking dinner for myself or taking in the stream of morning sun through the window, I’m happy I don’t need company, conversation, or background noise to feel ok. I’m good on my own.

I get that not everyone has the opportunity to live alone, that it can be considered a luxury. I have lots of gratitude for this time to explore who I am more and find a deeper connection with my space.

And, while I do see myself sharing home again🤍, I’ll take these lessons as tools to apply to helping others design their spaces in whatever stage in life they are in as well.

For the past few years, I’ve yearned for a long term home. I move. A lot. And, although Baja had been my place since 2020, circumstances have had me pack and move, pack and move.

Yesterday I had a conversation with my mentor, Kimberly Garner, about how transience cultivates the inner home.

It’s so true.

Lately, I’m not so attached to the dream of having a house. I feel that all of my movement not just in Baja, but throughout my life, has well equipped me with:

•the ability to home-ify pretty much any space
•an ease for nomadic-ness especially in ever shifting times
•a strong sense of my inner sanctuary; my foundation, root, home I carry wherever I land

Don’t get me wrong…where you dwell is important. I believe it’s an extension of identity. This changes just as you do.

So is, too, finding the space inside yourself you can rest in again and again.

This is my home. It’s a Baja casita with a spiral staircase inside leading up to my mezzanine bedroom. It’s got pink trim and cement counters.

The palapa roof keeps it cool in sweltering months. Sometimes I can hear critters journeying from one side to the other. Hence, a mosquito net is a bed must-have. I pretend it’s the canopy bed I always wanted as a little girl…so, it’s ok.

I don’t own it, I rent it. But, the inside is all me. My treasures from travels, my sourced pieces from unusual thrift spots. My favorite painting from Tunis hangs there, as it has in so many other places I’ve called home.

In the short time I’ve been there, already it’s housed memory. A small welcoming dinner with friends, cups of tea and journal writing, a recent visit from my dear niece and nephew, my sister and brother-in-law.

This reflection of home feels so significant. As I witness the loss of so many homes in the Los Angeles fires, I am enveloped in the devastation. What anguish! On so many levels. The loss of lives. The environmental damage, natural habitats of animals severely impacted…the material loss of houses and schools and businesses.

And then there’s the extinguishing that goes beyond the physical. Home is history and memories, it’s the story of us, it’s the hearth of our existence here. Home is where we find safety, peace, and a layered expression of self. When we lose home, whether chosen or forced, it feels shattering.

Part of why this hits home is because I grew up in Pasadena. I have nothing but love for that area, for my ties to Los Angeles; it such a part of me.

I have no idea what it feels like for these communities now and what they are experiencing. I unite in deep compassion, knowing that what is happening is beyond heart breaking.

What can we do?

We are all one big human family. Support others in all the ways you can. You know what that looks like.
It looks like love.

The only thing to do when catching myself in this type of loop is break it. Stand up and sink my feet in the sand. Wake an hour earlier and watch the sunrise. Step outside my comfort box and learn a choreographed dance for guests at my birthday party. (Yeah, that happened!)

Basically, be in my body, really be in it. I’ve realized lately that I live more in my head, more in the wondering or wishing or worrying. All of that takes me out of what’s true and here and home. It’s this skin, these hands, this beating heart. I reside here.

No matter how many times I move or start over, this self is constant. Honoring it daily with deep breath, nourishing connection, and devout gratitude, is the practice. It’s the sustenance for valued time on this here planet.

I welcome this decade and new year with more play, more art, more love, more joy. And, I wish the same for you as well.

Being a solopreneur can be…well, lonely. I’ve been on my own for 10+ years and while I love the freedom this gives me in my business, I often crave collaboration. It’s one of the reasons I started @shedesignspodcast with Desha.

For the past 4 days I’ve had the honor to work on a photo shoot here. The backdrop was breathtaking. The hours pretty grueling. The work, physical.

The best thing though? The teamwork, creative collaboration and shared vision.

I felt honored to witness the creation in the hands of some bad ass women at the helm. Their tenacity and sharp skills inspire me.

I realize that this kind of magic is more of what I am gravitating towards.

Something special happens when women support, engage, inspire other women.

Design is NOT glamorous.

The after photos are. The filtered process can be. But, truly?

Interior design is sweaty (see my “glistening” complexion), a journey of long hours, an exercise in creative hacks.

I’ve had my business for over 10 years now and while it continues to challenge me in the best ways, it’s also what I ❤️ doing.

Design is NOT glamorous.

The after photos are. The filtered process can be. But, truly?

Interior design is sweaty (see my “glistening” complexion), a journey of long hours, an exercise in creative hacks.

I’ve had my business for over 10 years now and while it continues to challenge me in the best ways, it’s also what I ❤️ doing.

Online, in person or a hybrid of the two… I am happy to be a part of one of the most important things to people, making home!

Lately, my fire 🔥comes from guiding women into home confidence…teaching them how to tap into their intuitive designer within and create a space they are proud of.

Like everything, books carry energy.

A lot of energy!

While they tell a literal story that you engage with, on a subconscious level, the way they impact you leaves a trail of feelings.

Its wonderful to decorate your home with books AND it’s important to check in and ask:
🤔how does this book make me feel?
🤔did it leave remnants of melancholy or intrigue?
🤔Does it inspire?
🤔Was it passed along by someone I don’t have a good relationship with anymore?
🤔Is it associated with a life memory?

A member of my Room Revival Challenge took the practice in of sifting through her book shelf. She desired a bedroom that was more calming, to create a sanctuary and she realized that some of the books on display were cluttering the potential of that feeling. After the exercise, she felt “surprisingly good!”

I extend the challenge to you…what do your books say?

“Feels warmer; I like it!”

My client stepped back in admiration of what she’d just done.👏🏼

The simple acts of cozying up the chair with a throw and hanging up a wooden mask brought back from when they’d lived in the Congo made ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

3 weeks together in their new flat, I helped with color palettes, taught with rearrangement and led with suggested pieces.

Together we went shopping for treasures in vintage shops.

Before I arrived, my client felt like it “just wasn’t home.”

By the end of our time, she was making design decisions with more sass and confidence! She thanked me for helping her love her home.

I believe as dwellers of our homes, we should have a lot to do with the created energy of it.

I see myself as a design guide…stepping into a co creative role with my clients.

What is more satisfying and alluring than an enhanced space, is the esteem clients experience that comes with designing it.

I’m not crafty. Creative, but not crafty.

I hugely admire and am a little envious of people who make things with their hands…people who paint or knit or make jewelry.

It’s not for a lack of trying. I’ve taken painting lessons and once my sister gifted me a clay class where the result was far from the cup I envisioned and with its sharp peaks was more like a weapon.

I remember I was sweating in that class as everyone else slid from one phase to another while I struggled to keep the clay from cracking.😅

Last week after 3 hours of working on a glass mosaic, my teacher looked at my tense posture and intense expression and said: “This should be enjoyable!”

It was my friend, Thalia, who asked about my reaction to creating as I found the stress creep up while picking fabrics for a quilt she is helping me make.

I dunno. Maybe there’s a sense of perfection I’m attached to? That I won’t do it “right”.

I didn’t grow up with encouragement to just be messy or create without rules or color outside the lines.

It’s funny. You’d think that with design I’d also hold tight to this approach to creating.

But, I don’t.

I find designing a space a huge feeing invitation to play with color and pattern and light and form.
I love how it changes with our life stages and invokes a mood immediately.

I don’t stress about “getting it right”. I appreciate the imperfection, the wabi sabi of design. It’s like storytelling…a unique unfolding of experience.

Perhaps the point of playing with these other artsy methods is to remind me of the beauty in creating itself.

Until then, designing spaces is my craft and to help others on their creative journey of making their home a work of art.

Being in nature revives me. It’s where I find a pure kind of joy. It’s home at its essence.

A few days ago I had the beautiful experience of being with my cousin on her husband’s farm. They cultivate pears, apples, plums, kiwi, and the reddest, tastier tomatoes I’ve ever had!

This kind of living is simple; directly woven to the earth and what she whispers.

I marvel at the peace, at the expansiveness, at the plentitude.

My thoughts go to those who’ve been stripped of this, brutally. Gratitude is a daily prayer, as is grief. We can hold both. As a human family, we must.

Because where are we without our compassion?

Quite a strong word use, I thought. Did she really mean that?

Looking it up: it means a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty.

Well, yeah, I know spaces can make you feel that way. I’ve been in them many times. So maybe that’s not an exaggeration.

But…and here’s the but…your home is meant to be your temple, haven, sanctuary. If it’s not, there’s something to look at. There’s an invitation to elevate, enhance, revive.

I’m brewing up something special, a chance for you to do just that.

So, the question is…do you want to be invited? 😉

It’s the only place in the house with 2 boys and a hubby that’s truly hers!

While she can’t describe exactly what that looks like, I understand.

Only 2 days prior another client said she “stays safe” with her home design…that she craves a lot more COLOR & more PLAYFULNESS!

This is so common and natural and right! The little creative kid in us is there…under the lists and family admin, behind the sensible furniture and outdated wall art.

Somewhere inside is a bit of a pent up scream!
“This isn’t the only version of me!”
“I’m not in my natural habitat”.
“Something is feeling off!”

I know those messages. I feel them. The truth is our ever evolving selves need to crawl out and stretch … try on new things…get a little color messy…find expression or curl up in apathy.

Now, you may not have a whole room like an office to yourself. But, there’s always a way to reclaim yourself through your space.

I once shared a tiny hotel room with my ex husband for a month and I made that space… in a corner… on a window sill, mine believe it or not. It was my little sanctuary.

Design is magic like that. When intentional it’s damn magic✨.
