Intuitive is what I call their approach…sensing what the space needs to feel inviting and knowing how to collab together with ease.

There is serious telepathy going on here. As co-owners, Rachel and Stef flow, balance each other out, and know when to let ego step down so the project can thrive!

Today was about getting this condo done with calming neutrals and a minimalist appeal.

A healing home with soulful design.
It’s rare when a client wants to decorate a space solely with second hand pieces. We’ve hit consignment shops, thrift stores, and the Alameda Antique Flea market. The home is intended to be space for various therapies and meditation circles. Its vibe is eclectic, global, and zen. I feel honored to co create such a special healing home.

🌿Deb. Santa Cruz, CA.
A design-home exchange.
I’ve had the joy of staying on site of projects a few times. It’s the way I prefer to design…to create as I feel into the space. In March, I had a unique arrangement of exchanging design services for rent in a beautiful part of Santa Cruz, CA. My client, Deb, is in her late 60s and built a small one bedroom in the back of her house which she will rent out. I created a design plan to complete the space and make it turn key ready!

A bedroom revival post divorce.
Relationship breakups are one of the hardest life transitions there are. From experience and a place of deep empathy, I guide clients going through this to discern emotional clutter, purge pieces that no longer serve them, and reinvent a once shared space into one that exalts a new version of themselves. This is what I’m doing with Susanne who is re designing her bedroom after 20+ years of marriage.

I had been feeling lonely a couple of weeks ago. It wasn’t a surprise. In March, I said good-bye to the community and familiarity of Baja to try something new in Santa Cruz, a place I’d only been to a handful of times in my life.

With one friend connection here, a single suitcase, and a very well used GPS, I found this transition was stretching me. And….I felt lonely.

Sharing this with my holistic interior design teacher, Kimberly Garner, I looked around at my surroundings and mused: I think my environment is mirroring my feelings.

I’d been living in my client’s practically empty ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) for several weeks, planning its design. Blank walls stared at me. Naked floors begged for warmth. Space echoed with nothing in it.
It all made me quite uncomfortable.

I was interpreting the home as empty, as a void. This isn’t something we readily embrace in American culture. Often emptiness connotes lack, a sense of barrenness. Without realizing it, the conversation I was having with my space was: “This is empty and sad and lonely.”

What Kimberly invited me to do was to reframe the message. What if emptiness is positive? What if it invokes spaciousness? What if it is the seed for possibility? In this context, the reality is not barren at all, really.

Given where I currently am in my life, a place of reinvention and certain adventure, the interpretation aligns. Having so much empty space provides me the freedom to create whatever I want with it, and isn’t that such a powerful feeling?

SOLO LIVING: lessons & benefits of being your own roomie [newsletter excerpt]

Throughout my whole life, I think I’ve lived alone a total of two years. I had a slight resistance to it maybe, thinking I’d be lonely. Yet, mid life has given me the chance to experience this and I’ve gotta say, it’s really not that bad- at all! There are many things I didn’t expect to receive; here are a few:

☀️Identifying on my priorities. Living on my own, I realize making my bed starts off the day right, keeping surfaces clean helps with mental clutter, and having a stash of dark chocolate somewhere always helps a hard day.

☀️Reclaiming my emotional space. There’s something that happens when you can play whatever music suits your mood, when you can sage the heck out your room at any given moment, when you can get up in the middle of the night to journal or meditate or binge on said chocolate and not have to worry about anyone else.

☀️Getting to know myself and really like her. Moving through the day in my space, I recognize I feel ease. Whether I’m cooking dinner for myself or taking in the stream of morning sun through the window, I’m happy I don’t need company, conversation, or background noise to feel ok. I’m good on my own.

I get that not everyone has the opportunity to live alone, that it can be considered a luxury. I have lots of gratitude for this time to explore who I am more and find a deeper connection with my space.

And, while I do see myself sharing home again🤍, I’ll take these lessons as tools to apply to helping others design their spaces in whatever stage in life they are in as well.

For the past few years, I’ve yearned for a long term home. I move. A lot. And, although Baja had been my place since 2020, circumstances have had me pack and move, pack and move.

Yesterday I had a conversation with my mentor, Kimberly Garner, about how transience cultivates the inner home.

It’s so true.

Lately, I’m not so attached to the dream of having a house. I feel that all of my movement not just in Baja, but throughout my life, has well equipped me with:

•the ability to home-ify pretty much any space
•an ease for nomadic-ness especially in ever shifting times
•a strong sense of my inner sanctuary; my foundation, root, home I carry wherever I land

Don’t get me wrong…where you dwell is important. I believe it’s an extension of identity. This changes just as you do.

So is, too, finding the space inside yourself you can rest in again and again.

This is my home. It’s a Baja casita with a spiral staircase inside leading up to my mezzanine bedroom. It’s got pink trim and cement counters.

The palapa roof keeps it cool in sweltering months. Sometimes I can hear critters journeying from one side to the other. Hence, a mosquito net is a bed must-have. I pretend it’s the canopy bed I always wanted as a little girl…so, it’s ok.

I don’t own it, I rent it. But, the inside is all me. My treasures from travels, my sourced pieces from unusual thrift spots. My favorite painting from Tunis hangs there, as it has in so many other places I’ve called home.

In the short time I’ve been there, already it’s housed memory. A small welcoming dinner with friends, cups of tea and journal writing, a recent visit from my dear niece and nephew, my sister and brother-in-law.

This reflection of home feels so significant. As I witness the loss of so many homes in the Los Angeles fires, I am enveloped in the devastation. What anguish! On so many levels. The loss of lives. The environmental damage, natural habitats of animals severely impacted…the material loss of houses and schools and businesses.

And then there’s the extinguishing that goes beyond the physical. Home is history and memories, it’s the story of us, it’s the hearth of our existence here. Home is where we find safety, peace, and a layered expression of self. When we lose home, whether chosen or forced, it feels shattering.

Part of why this hits home is because I grew up in Pasadena. I have nothing but love for that area, for my ties to Los Angeles; it such a part of me.

I have no idea what it feels like for these communities now and what they are experiencing. I unite in deep compassion, knowing that what is happening is beyond heart breaking.

What can we do?

We are all one big human family. Support others in all the ways you can. You know what that looks like.
It looks like love.

The palapa roof keeps it cool in sweltering months. Sometimes I can hear critters journeying from one side to the other. Hence, a mosquito net is a bed must-have. I pretend it’s the canopy bed I always wanted as a little girl…so, it’s ok.

I don’t own it, I rent it. But, the inside is all me. My treasures from travels, my sourced pieces from unusual thrift spots. My favorite painting from Tunis hangs there, as it has in so many other places I’ve called home.

In the short time I’ve been there, already it’s housed memory. A small welcoming dinner with friends, cups of tea and journal writing, a recent visit from my dear niece and nephew, my sister and brother-in-law.

This reflection of home feels so significant. As I witness the loss of so many homes in the Los Angeles fires, I am enveloped in the devastation. What anguish! On so many levels. The loss of lives. The environmental damage, natural habitats of animals severely impacted…the material loss of houses and schools and businesses.

And then there’s the extinguishing that goes beyond the physical. Home is history and memories, it’s the story of us, it’s the hearth of our existence here. Home is where we find safety, peace, and a layered expression of self. When we lose home, whether chosen or forced, it feels shattering.

Part of why this hits home is because I grew up in Pasadena. I have nothing but love for that area, for my ties to Los Angeles; it such a part of me.

I have no idea what it feels like for these communities now and what they are experiencing. I unite in deep compassion, knowing that what is happening is beyond heart breaking.

What can we do?

We are all one big human family. Support others in all the ways you can. You know what that looks like.
It looks like love.

I don’t know how it happened. This turning 50 thing. But, it did.

I guess there were warning signs...like 49 years leading up😂. Still, it’s not something I was totally prepared for.

Birthday landmarks like this carry some heaviness or at least as much as we allow. For a bit there, I let the usual weights stack up:

•shouldn’t I have my own house by now?
•where’s that partner and family I promised myself?
•have i discovered my purpose yet?

You know, the usual societal squeeze, the adopted scripts that are tired and old.

The only thing to do when catching myself in this type of loop is break it. Stand up and sink my feet in the sand. Wake an hour earlier and watch the sunrise. Step outside my comfort box and learn a choreographed dance for guests at my birthday party. (Yeah, that happened!)

Basically, be in my body, really be in it. I’ve realized lately that I live more in my head, more in the wondering or wishing or worrying. All of that takes me out of what’s true and here and home. It’s this skin, these hands, this beating heart. I reside here.

No matter how many times I move or start over, this self is constant. Honoring it daily with deep breath, nourishing connection, and devout gratitude, is the practice. It’s the sustenance for valued time on this here planet.

I welcome this decade and new year with more play, more art, more love, more joy. And, I wish the same for you as well.

Being a solopreneur can be…well, lonely. I’ve been on my own for 10+ years and while I love the freedom this gives me in my business, I often crave collaboration. It’s one of the reasons I started @shedesignspodcast with Desha.

For the past 4 days I’ve had the honor to work on a photo shoot here. The backdrop was breathtaking. The hours pretty grueling. The work, physical.

The best thing though? The teamwork, creative collaboration and shared vision.

I felt honored to witness the creation in the hands of some bad ass women at the helm. Their tenacity and sharp skills inspire me.

I realize that this kind of magic is more of what I am gravitating towards.

Something special happens when women support, engage, inspire other women.

My last group offering, Room Revival, had this energy. A group of 10 women encouraging each other to tap into their intuitive designer within.
Pretty damn powerful!

So…I’m doing it again. This time it’s Home Proud!, a 7 day journey to break through the things that give us a lack of home confidence and shift into design empowerment.
